It’s Nerdy Derby Time!

From June 5-9, 2017, Class VI will participate in a week-long learning experience that explores the invisible forces that affect a vehicle’s motion and investigates how design informs function. What are the forces that affect motion and how can a car’s design be optimized to carry out a specific performance task given these forces?

 

Working with teachers across the disciplines, students will participate in lessons that center on applied mathematics, the scientific process, and design thinking. Students will test the effect of several variables (vehicle mass, mass placement, wheelbase, air resistance) on the speed of the vehicle. Students will collect, analyze, and visualize their experimental data, and use this information to aid them in optimizing their race car for a variety of design challenges throughout the week.
